Family Service Internship Program
Family Service offers internships to graduate and port-graduate students in Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, and Social Work programs. Interns spend ten to twenty hours per week at the agency, for a minimum of ten months. Interns have the opportunity to work closely with and in cooperation with allied professionals and community agencies.
The program content includes supervised therapeutic relationships in an outpatient setting. Core experiences will encompass client-centered intakes and psychotherapy with individuals, couples, families, and groups, school-based counseling programs, and critical incident stress debriefing. Although the program orientation is eclectic, interns will develop an understanding of the various therapeutic approaches, including developmental, psychoanalytic, behavioral, client centered, cognitive, and other theoretical models.
The focus of the internship will be on providing the trainee with diversified clinical experiences involving adults, adolescents, and children. Each intern will examine a wide spectrum of mental health services with the aim of developing appropriate therapeutic skills. A minimum of two hours per week of supervision is provided throughout the internship period. Individual and group supervision by licensed staff is included within the ten to twenty hour commitment. Attendance at weekly professional in-service seminars and monthly psychiatric consultations is required.
Internships conform to existing standards by the State of California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners as well as the Board of Medical Quality Assurance's Psychology Examining Committee and the California Psychology Internship Council. Interns are expected to meet their ethical and professional responsibilities with the agency.
Application requirements include:
- Enrollment or completion (within 5 years) of a masters or doctoral program in either psychology, marriage and family therapy, or social work in an accredited educational institution.
